How Do You Represent Diversity?
My name is Pablo Reyes Langaine. My pronouns are he/him/his. I proudly identify as Mestizo, coming from a multi-racial lineage, including Mexican indigenous heritage (Purepecha), Afro-Latinx, Andalusian Spanish, and Basque French.

Furthermore, I consider myself a nomad. I have lived on 3 continents, in 8 different cities, and traveled to dozens of countries, and this impacts my music as well. I have been shaped into an artist who explores and learns from every culture I have had the privilege to know.

Born in Mexico City in an artistic family, at age 5 my family briefly moved to Brazil, my first nomadic adventure. This primary experience of discovering another country’s culture is embedded in my musical sensibilities. My father traveled often for work, and he would bring me as his traveling partner, going to different places all over Mexico and Latin-America. We would always bring home different musical instruments, from Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, and more.

I moved to Europe to study, where I was involved in experimental music and contemporary jazz scenes. After completing a Master’s degree in jazz composition and guitar performance in The Netherlands, I received an artist’s visa and lived in New York City as a performing musician. I played with many World Music ensembles, performing and recording with them around the world.

My love of music inspired my nomadic adventures and pushed me to explore a variety of musical styles. A new adventure began calling me, and I followed a life-long dream, to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career in film music. I have been working as a freelance composer, orchestrator, producer, and guitarist.

For the most part of my adult life, I have been an immigrant. Even with the privilege of being a permanent resident on the path to citizenship in the United States, my experience in this great country has not always been easy. Multiple times I have experienced discrimination and micro-aggressions in the music and film industries: from being labeled as a musician only capable of creating Latin music, being questioned about my talents and skill set, to wage discrimination.

As a Latinx immigrant who lived in Europe and the United States, I am sensitive to the challenges that we, ethnic minorities, face in the music and film industries. Therefore, over the last years, I have become determined to act towards getting involved in environments that are more inviting towards underrepresented minorities, women, and the socioeconomically underprivileged. As a member of the Composers Diversity Collective, I am committed to laying the groundwork for a mentorship program to bring young Latinx composers to collaborate and provide them with the experience needed to thrive in this ever-changing industry.
